“Beta has her own iPhone app”
(via Dan Budiac)
As if to provide an antidote to last night’s hand-wringing about how Silicon Valley douchebaggery is ruining the iPhone market, my friend Dan just posted this screenshot of a brilliant iPhone web app he wrote to keep track of his dog Beta’s walks. Tiny, ingenious, single-purpose apps like this always fill me with glee, and the human (or should I say dog) touches like the “Good girl!” button crack me up. The thing even pushes Beta’s walk/pee/poo status to Twitter, which is hilarious until you think about how practical it could be for a couple. Dan, I salute you—I say get this thing native and on the app store pronto!

You know, in case you haven’t yet. Or moved recently, etc.

consumed-i-this:
lunch: burrata, tomato, basil, anchovy, balsamic.
Since I’m a peasant, I had to look up what burrata is, and now I’m very keen to try it. Wow. Doesn’t that just look gorgeous?

It’s hard to understand or believe or trust any price you see, isn’t it? You just don’t know. At some point, particularly if you understand anything at all about business and don’t just assume that all business is commercial evil and that everybody should work for nothing and give stuff away to people who appreciate it’s beauty and will say Thank You—once you’re beyond that (and many aren’t), then you understand that many things can affect the cost of something, and the mere passing of time and oil, not wind, drives up the cost when the goods come by truck or steamer instead of ponys and sailing ships. For a short while my local small, happily anonymous bar in a desire to retain a degree of anonymity will probably have a ‘please turn off your location information’ sign. But it won’t make a difference - if the shared trajectories of me and my close friends doesn’t tell the tale; then that geo-tagged photo taken by your tech-unsavvy friend in the corner will. Bless her for all her good intentions, her desire to capture her vision of you and share with the world. And therein lies the rub – because any decision to opt out is not simply an issue of whether to opt out of the technology, but ultimately one of whether to opt out of society. People have asked, so I’m telling. This is my favorite mug for drinking coffee at home. Choose any color, you can’t go wrong. They’re affordable, because I buy discounted seconds at the factory store.
