Elevate me later (so many fortresses and ways to attack)
A nature study of life in the wilderness of San Francisco, sharing coffee and tea with friends
The San Francisco Center for the Book is devoted to teaching the many arts and crafts that go into making books by hand. We introduce and foster the joys of books and bookmaking—their history, artistry, continuing presence in our culture and their enduring importance as a medium of self-expression. We provide both a home for Bay Area book artists and a place where the wider community can discover book arts. Everyone is welcome here, experienced practitioners and newcomers alike. Our scores of workshops foster learning at all levels: from introductory classes to yearlong courses, from traditional bookbinding to cutting-edge printing techniques to experimental book forms. SFCB I just enrolled in a series of letterpress courses that after successful completion, I’ll be able to rent open studio time on their equipment for my own projects. Computers are cool - I’ve been using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop since the Mac IIci (32-bit clean!) days, but hand composing type really gets me going. I can also create photopolymer plates from digital files if I want to blend the ‘best of both worlds’. The San Francisco Center For The Book have three Vandercook presses… the same kind I used at CalArts way back in the day. I’ve long dreamed of having the space for my own press, but for a variety of lame ass reasons, it’s never happened. So I figured why wait, when I can use what’s already available in my community.
